Discover the Gift of Discernment
Everyone experiences moments of hope and energy in prayer, and also times of heaviness or discouragement. St. Ignatius of Loyola called these movements consolation and desolation. Learning to recognize them, and to respond with wisdom, is at the heart of discernment.

The Ignatian Discernment Institute exists to make this wisdom clear and practical for daily life. Through the teaching of the Rules for the Discernment of Spirits, illustrated by the pastoral method of Fr. Timothy Gallagher, O.M.V., countless souls have discovered a path of peace, clarity, and renewed confidence in God.

Here you can explore:
-
The Rules – St. Ignatius’s practical guide to recognizing and responding to the movements of the heart.
-
Consolation and Desolation – Understanding the rhythms of spiritual life.
-
Books and Media – Accessible resources to deepen your learning.
-
Articles and Reflections – Practical examples of discernment at work today.
Discernment is not reserved for experts or religious. It is for every soul who desires to live closely with God in the midst of daily life.
